In order to empathize with someone’s experience you must be willing to believe them as they see it and not how you imagine their experience to be

Empathy is a skill that can be developed. With practice you can become increasingly empathetic, and more in tune with the young children in your life.

Benefits of empathy include:

  • a deeper sense of connection
  • a greater understanding of what others might be thinking or feeling
  • promotion of helping behaviors
  • lower stress while increasing resilience
  • and enables us to respond in ways that support and strengthen relationships

While adults must practice empathy, babies are born ready for it.

As babies, we know and understand the power of connection even before we are born.  And the truth is that at every age and every stage of life everything, and everyone, is connected. When we realize our intimate relation to others, compassion, and empathy, naturally follows. Featuring real Wisconsin babies, join us on a cinematic musical adventure exploring where Empathy comes from and how to get more of it.

The next time your child is experiencing big, intense feelings take a moment to tune-in and imagine the situation from their perspective.

Perspective taking helps us to slow down and appreciate how something that might not be a “big deal” to an adult can feel like a very big deal to a young child. When we take this extra moment to pause and think about the situation from our child’s perspective, it helps us to be more empathic, which leads to more sensitive responses.

When we model empathic, sensitive responses to big feelings expressed by our littles they feel important and learn how to become more empathic too. Empathy, like any skill, gets better with practice.
